Our team has helped hundreds of dog owners across Toledo and northwest Ohio rehabilitate aggressive dogs through structured, results-driven programs. Why Professional Aggression Training is Critical for Your Dog

Dog aggression isn’t something that resolves on its own. Without proper intervention, reactive behavior typically escalates, putting your family, community, and dog at risk. Here’s why working with professional dog trainers matters:

Family Safety First

Training helps you improve control, reduce risky situations, and create a safer routine at home and on walks. We focus on practical skills you can use around triggers so you feel more prepared and confident handling your dog.

Better Quality of Life

Reactive dogs experience constant stress and anxiety. Through counter-conditioning and desensitization, we help dogs feel comfortable in situations that previously triggered fear or aggression.

Long-Term Progress

Aggression and reactivity take consistency. Our approach focuses on building reliable obedience and teaching you how to work around triggers safely over time, so improvements are realistic and maintainable.

Professional Trigger Assessment

We identify what sets your dog off, how close they can be to a trigger before reacting, and what patterns show up most often. That information helps us choose the safest starting point and the right plan for your dog.

Improved Socialization

With proper training, your dog can learn to handle encounters with people, other dogs, and various environments without reactive episodes—opening up opportunities for walks, visits with friends, and a normal life together.

Our Aggression Training Services

Private Lessons

We offer private lessons that can be tailored for aggression and reactivity work, focusing on building a strong obedience foundation. Training typically starts with obedience foundations and progresses to controlled exposure exercises, helping you handle your dog more safely and calmly in real-life situations.

Board and train allows our trainers to apply consistent behavior modification protocols throughout each day, accelerating progress that might take months with weekly sessions alone. Graduates receive lifetime refresher support to maintain their success.

Our Aggression Training Process

Step 1: Comprehensive Behavior Assessment

Every aggressive dog training program begins with a thorough evaluation. We assess your dog’s triggers, body language, and complete behavioral history to understand what’s driving the aggression. Our trainers examine whether the behavior stems from fear, frustration, resource guarding, or other underlying causes—because effective treatment requires accurate understanding.

Step 2: Customized Training Plan Development

Based on assessment findings, we create an individualized behavior modification program tailored to your dog’s specific needs. No two aggressive dogs are alike, and cookie-cutter approaches don’t work. We select appropriate training methods, establish realistic timelines, and set clear milestones for measuring progress.

Step 3: Intensive Training Implementation

Training combines structured obedience work with targeted behavior modification. Your dog learns foundational commands that establish communication and control, then applies those skills during controlled exposure to triggers. Whether through private lessons or board and train, we systematically work through real-world scenarios to build reliable responses under distraction.

Step 4: Owner Education and Ongoing Support

Your dog’s long-term success depends on you. We teach proper handling techniques, help you recognize early warning signs, and show you how to manage situations effectively at home. Board and train graduates receive lifetime refresher support, ensuring you have access to professional guidance whenever questions arise. This ongoing relationship helps maintain the progress your dog has made.

We had an amazing experience with the two week board and train program! Our Rottweiler/Coonhound mix, Apollo, went through the program at 6½ months old, and now at 8 months he's still retaining everything he learned. His recall is excellent, which was our biggest goal since we have a large unfenced backyard. He also has a great sit, down, place, heel, and now walks calmly on a loose leash. The biggest difference has been his confidence. He used to be afraid of loud noises, other dogs, and even going outside after dark. Now he's much more confident, and we can even take him to pet-friendly stores without worrying because he listens so well. Dylan was an awesome trainer and kept us updated every day with texts, photos, and videos, which gave us so much peace of mind. We couldn't be happier with the results and would absolutely recommend this program!

Dylan did such a good job working with our dog Ranger! He and Michelle treated Ranger like family. Before training it was hard to go on walks with him, because he would bark at everything and it made others feel uncomfortable. Now Ranger is no longer scared on walks, and doesn't bark anymore. Ranger was also afraid to jump on objects, but now he enjoys jumping up on our couch and relaxing with a favorite toy. I would highly recommend Dylan, he truly cared about our dog as much as we do!

We couldn’t be happier with the results from Lily’s 2-week training program! Our Goldendoodle came home more confident, responsive, and well-behaved, and it’s made such a difference for our whole family. The trainers were knowledgeable, professional, and clearly cared about Lily every step of the way with daily reports, photos, and videos. They kept us informed throughout the process and gave us the tools we needed to continue reinforcing her training at home. If you’re looking for expert dog training with real results, we would absolutely recommend them to anyone. Thank you for taking such great care of Lily!

If there was a higher score, I would use it! Michelle and Dylan were absolutely amazing with my 1.5 Morkie who had LOTS of energy and NO interest in listening. He was treated like he would as a dog in a regular home. He was exposed to everything a dog would normally experience and then some. Taking him to parks and stores, etc. He was able to interact with dogs, cats, babies, etc. Every day I was sent updates verbally and with pictures and videos. I was floored at how quickly he started listening! Incredibly kind, very available and loves your dog as much I would and my dog was genuinely as excited to see Michelle as he was me if we walked into a room. I would, without hesitation, recommend Michelle and Dylan at Off Leash K9 Training to ANYONE.. no matter how hard you think your dog might be to train. They will be loved and forever changed in the best way. Also, I'm pretty sure my dog wants to go back for more park time!

Edit: Coming back over 6 years later to report that my now 7 year old guy is still a fantastic puppy citizen! I have contacted Michelle several times over the years with various questions and concerns, and she has always responded quickly with helpful advice curated specifically to my dog and his quirks. My dog has lived nearly his entire life with off leash freedom because of Off Leash K9 Training Toledo and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to trust them with my puppy back in 2019! We have since moved away from Toledo, but will absolutely be traveling back to take any future dogs to them for training - they are the best of the best!! Original Review: I had my large 7 month old Goldendoodle do a board and train with Michelle and Dylan about a month ago and couldn’t be more thrilled with the results! He was reactive to everything, easily distracted, pulled on the leash, and thought most commands were optional. He came home with a perfect heel, could walk past other dogs/people and completely ignore them, and listens to commands now. During the two weeks they had my pup, they sent me updates with photos and videos every day and treated my dog like one of their own. Even over a month after training, they’re still happy to answer all of my questions and help with whatever we need! We couldn’t have had a better experience!!

I won't bury the lede (as though a five star review makes that possible): getting this training changed the entire dynamic in my home and I see new improvements almost daily still, even a couple of months in. I can see how that will continue in time. My ten year old dog (Mason) grew up in a house with anxiety and, as a result, had no real socialization. He's not gotten along with one of my two cats cats historically, as hissing would trigger him. It wasn't safe for either of them. I've understood for a long time that I had control over this when he was growing up, but I didn't realize I could help him with the change. A previous dog I'd had when he was born until just last year had similar issues, but to a lesser degree, and a different local place had told me she was a lost cause after we'd purchased an entire package for training so we didn't finish. We only got so far as sitting on a bench with her at Wildwood far from everything. As a result, though, I thought that my dog Mason could especially not be changed as his issues were worse. I was wrong. I paid for the aggression training at Off-Leash. We went through the basic training and that was plenty sufficient. Mason's always looked to me for guidance, but I've not known how to make him feel truly safe. Learning a couple of specific commands, and understanding that they offer him a feeling of safety, was key. Additionally, I'm neurodivergent and generally do best with very clear instruction. Rebecca was incredible in this context and knew just how to communicate with me. Identifying and correcting my own frantic tendencies during training did so much to help. The entire house feels safer. I thought I was close with Mason, but it's different now. He trusts me. And he should. I'm so grateful for this training. If you have any doubts about the viability of dog training in your situation, as long as you can follow through on regular walks and trips out to the store and whatnot, I assure you dogs can be helped. Of note: I intentionally waited for this review until what would have been the end of the Advanced training. What I mentioned about continual growth seems to be a pattern so I wanted to wait a bit after we completed training to write review so I could have enough information to be confident in the results, not just the training.

Our 8 month old Molly just completed a 2 week board & train with Dylan and she is so much fun now to walk at the nearby park and on the boardwalk and behaves without jumping and pulling to meet people and dogs. Guests aren’t mulled anymore either ! She comes every time told to and does “place” and other commands so well. And we could see she loved Dylan so much that we were afraid she’d want to stay with him permanently. He’s a pawsitive and consistent trainer. Before training she would get the wildest zoomies and was so hard to settle down but now we just say “Molly, no” quickly, firmly, not harshly, and without yelling and she stops!!!! I can’t say enough about all the great improvement in her obedience and much much calmer demeanor in so many situations. Thank you so much, Dylan, Michelle, and Off Leash K9 Training - Toledo, Ohio! My husband and I tell each other everyday now we did the right thing for Molly and for us!!!!

I had a very good experience with Rebecca. My dog Tilly and I had eight private lessons. Three of the lessons were off site, which helped in getting her used to lots of distractions. Rebecca offered many helpful suggestions, and always had good answers to all my questions.

Dog Aggression Training In Toledo

And Surrounding Areas

Frequently Asked Questions

Can all aggressive dogs be successfully trained?

Most aggressive dogs can make significant improvement with the right approach. During our initial assessment, we evaluate your dog’s specific situation to provide realistic expectations. Factors like severity, duration of behavior, underlying causes, and owner commitment all influence outcomes. Research shows 70-90% success rates with proper counter-conditioning protocols—though “success” may look different for each dog.

How long does aggression training take?

Timelines vary based on aggression severity and chosen training format. Our structured programs typically run 8 weeks for private lesson formats, combining foundational obedience with behavior modification. Board and train options (1-Week or 2-Week) accelerate initial progress, though follow-through at home remains essential. Severe cases or those with underlying medical issues may require extended work.

Is aggression training safe for my family?

Professional oversight is what makes aggression training safe. Our trainers understand how to manage reactive dogs, control exposure intensity, and prevent situations from escalating. We teach you proper handling techniques so you can continue the work safely at home. Early intervention actually prevents problems—studies show addressing aggression promptly stops 65% of cases from escalating further.

Will my dog need obedience training before starting aggression training?

In many cases, obedience work is part of the aggression training process because it helps create better communication, control, and structure. Foundational commands can make it easier to manage difficult situations and support behavior modification, but the exact approach depends on your dog’s behavior, triggers, and overall training needs.
