At A Glance
Juno is a 6-month-old Husky mix who enrolled in a 2-Week Board and Train with Off Leash K9 Training Toledo. She had a basic understanding of sit and a strong relationship with her family, but low confidence made her easily startled and difficult to predict in unfamiliar situations. Her program focused on foundational obedience, recall, engagement, impulse control, and confidence so her family could work toward safer hikes and outdoor adventures together.
Dog: Juno
Breed: Husky mix
Age: 6 months
Location: Toledo, OH
Program: 2-Week Board and Train
Trainer: Rebecca
Main Focus: Confidence, recall, engagement, prey drive, leash pulling, bolting, and fear around men
Outcome: A stronger obedience foundation and better preparation for safer, more focused walks and outdoor adventures
The Challenge
Juno needed help building confidence and learning to remain engaged with her family when distractions or unfamiliar situations made her nervous.
Before training, Juno:
- Became easily startled in unfamiliar situations
- Bolted hard when something frightened her
- Tried to chase rabbits, birds, bugs, and other small animals
- Pulled strongly toward exciting distractions
- Tried to eat objects from the ground
- Had difficulty remaining focused during walks
- Cowered or tried to escape when approached by men
- Needed a more dependable recall for outdoor activities
Juno generally walked well when the environment was calm. However, exciting animals or unexpected situations could quickly cause her to pull, chase, or bolt away.
Her family wanted to take her hiking and on more adventures. To do that safely, they needed Juno to develop stronger recall, better engagement, and more confidence around unfamiliar people and environments.
The Training Approach
Juno completed a 2-Week Board and Train designed to strengthen her basic obedience while helping her feel more secure in the world around her.
Training focused on:
- Teaching foundational obedience commands
- Building a more reliable recall
- Improving engagement and regular check-ins with her handler
- Practicing focus around animals and other outdoor distractions
- Teaching better leash control when Juno became excited
- Reducing impulsive chasing and scavenging behaviors
- Introducing Juno to new environments at a manageable pace
- Building confidence around unfamiliar sights, sounds, and people
- Helping her rely on her handler for direction when she felt uncertain
- Practicing calmer behavior around men without forcing interactions
The goal was to help Juno remain connected to her family, respond to direction, and recover more calmly when something startled or excited her.
The Results
During her two-week program, Juno worked on the obedience, engagement, and confidence-building skills needed for safer everyday walks and future outdoor adventures.
Her training addressed:
- Responding to recall around distractions
- Checking in more regularly with her handler
- Maintaining better focus when animals were nearby
- Walking with improved leash control
- Making calmer choices when startled
- Building confidence in new environments
- Developing more trust in her handler during uncertain situations
- Creating a stronger foundation for hiking and other public outings
Juno entered training with a close bond with her family and a basic understanding of sit. Her program was designed to build on that relationship while giving her clearer guidance in situations that previously caused fear, pulling, or impulsive chasing.
Specific final improvements should be confirmed against the complete before-and-after training video before publication.
Trainer Insight
Dogs with low confidence may react to uncertainty by freezing, cowering, pulling away, or suddenly bolting. These behaviors are not always easy to predict, especially when the dog is also highly motivated to chase moving animals.
Confidence-building training should combine clear obedience, controlled exposure, and consistent handler support. Teaching a dog to check in and follow direction can help the dog feel less responsible for handling unfamiliar situations alone.
For active families, reliable recall and engagement are especially important. Outdoor environments can include wildlife, unfamiliar people, changing terrain, and unexpected noises, so these skills should continue to be practiced after the formal training program ends.
